On the anniversary of the murder of our friend and Lough Derg Pilgrim Father Ragheed, Mass was offered today for him, his three colleagues murdered with him and all their families at St.Raphael's Parish, Yeading, Middx. The Mass was attended by members of the London Lough Derg Committee and prayers were said for peace in Iraq and a tribute paid to the Martyrs. London Lough Derg Committee.

Fr Ragheed did not die in vain, if it wasn't for people like him the world would be a worse place. He is truly a martyr.

Yesterday, after reading my appeal on behalf of the charity ICIN – Iraqi Christians In Need Charity at my Local Parish Church in Surrey, a lady presented me with a prayer card for Fr. Ragheed originating from Lough Derg. I was moved and touched by the concern of the British people. We pray that Fr. Ragheed’s death does not pass in vain and give courage to all Iraqi Christians that they are not forgotten in the west.

‘Christians in Iraq are going through a very tough time. So let us keep each other in prayer’ is part of Ragheed’s last email message to me, wishing everyone at Lough Derg well for the beginning of the 2007 season.
He added that he ‘had survived certain death many times’; sadly the next attack changed all that.
Like Saint Patrick, who came as a stranger to our country but did not remain so, Ragheed came among us and became one of what he himself referred to as ‘his Lough Derg family’. He made a deep and lasting impression on the many pilgrims who were fortunate enough to meet him; his simplicity and sincerity touched all.
In ‘Pilgrims Tales….and more’ (a compilation of stories from pilgrims and staff), he talked about the ‘rich heritage of Celtic Spirituality of the island and of the island experience’. He also spoke of ‘God’s grace, which brings that inner peace which all seek and which above all makes us an apostle, a disciple of Christ’.
Ragheed was indeed a true disciple, giving of himself to people wherever he met them. His dedication took him back to war-torn Iraq (“these are my people,…. that is where I belong”). There he risked everything so that his people could celebrate Eucharist and in doing so he made the ultimate sacrifice, allowing his body to be broken, his life’s blood to be poured out, in memory of the Lord Jesus.
I am in awe when I realise that a good friend, someone who so often prepared the altar for the early morning Mass, who frequently celebrated Eucharist with me, is a martyr for the faith and, (dare I say it) a saint in heaven.
We at Lough Derg mourn his passing and keep his parents, sisters and brothers in our prayers.
May Ragheed and his fellow Iraqi martyrs intercede with the Lord for all who were blessed to know and love him.
By the rivers of Babylon and the waters of Lough Derg we weep as we remember Ragheed.
But we shall rejoice and be glad.Margaret-a pilgrim

Our friend Father Ragheed will always be remembered by us as a Pilgrim of Lough Derg and especially when he told us of his first visit to L.D. and how much he enjoyed being there. We will always remember him, his friends who died with him, and his family on our Pilgrimages to St. Patrick's Purgatory. May they rest in Peace. Members of the London Lough Derg Committee
